USA ON FILM: PT 8 (THE PEOPLE OF SLAB CITY)

This is the last of the film camera uploads. During the trip, I visited an incredible place, called Slab City. Out in the middle of the desert of California, are a collection of people living by their own rules, and by their own means. I guess you could compare it in part to the hippie communes of the 1960’s, with many of the ideals from that era still present. It is a place where individuality and freedom are celebrated, as opposed to condemned and taxed. During my time there, I met some incredibly cool and interesting people, each of whom had their own fascinating stories to tell. I would have loved to stay longer, but time was not on my side. A return trip is a must!

The first guy I met was a man named ‘Papa Jimmy’, who told great stories of an interesting life lived. They are not my stories to tell, so I won’t, but he certainly is a fascinating character. He was getting tattooed in the back of his old bus when i met him.

Whilst here I also met a traveling blues musician, by the name of ‘Candyman’ ( www.candymanland.com ). He also had stories to share, tales of traveling and of big dreams.

This guy, who’s name I didn’t catch was doing this at the side of the road on the outskirts of Slab City, and I just had to stop and take a picture. I did not get his full story, but you can bet it was amazing!
