The English Desert

This place has been on the to-do list for some time now, so I decided it was time to go and pay a visit for a couple of days. The airbed was inflated in the back of the truck, cereal bars and bottles were crammed in the back with a spare t-shirt or two, and off I went. It wasn’t luxurious, but it sure was worth it.
The place in question is Dungeness, a very small village (?) where there is no soil, so nothing grows. There are huge expanses of dry arid land, strewn with old fishing boats, huts, and houses, most of which are built from old train carriages and bits of boats! The locals are proud of their way of living, and these dwellings apparently fetch quite high amounts of money, probably because they are so remote. Given that there are so few dwellings there, the village strangely has two lighthouses, two nuclear power plants, a miniature steam railway, and a couple of independent art galleries and the like. There are only a few daytime images, as I spent most of the day sleeping on the beach.

This is how I live while travelling around, not to glam, but it’s free, quite waterproof, and comfortable (although after a couple of days, no-one would want to be near me)…
